This course will focus on developing students’ observational skills while focusing on tone, form, proportion, likeness, depth, composition and texture. Special attention will be given to portraiture, drawing the human figure (with the aid of a live model), and still life. The objective of this course is to help students prepare a body of work for application to specialized visual art programs in high school, for an art related career or to develop their art abilities. Through a variety of painting, drawing, mixed media and sculpture projects, students will refine their skills. The goal is to help students develop a well-built portfolio by the end of the session.

Develop your observation and drawing skills, while creating finished pieces suitable for high school portfolio submission. The portfolio requirements for Beatrice des Loges, Immaculata and Canterbury High Schools will be discussed. Youth wanting to make portfolios of their work for their own interest are also welcome. Using themes from Alternative Art forms such as: silkscreen printing, design (zines,stickers or patches) and large scale art is done for the personal portfolio submissions. As well mandatory drawing tasks such as the genres of still life, architectural drawings, the portrait and the human figure are done. Practice rendering form, light and shadow, proportions, perspective and texture in drawing while you observe and do both exercises and final artworks. There will be a session with a live draped model. Exhibit your knowledge of form with a sculpture project and do mixed media personal projects to meet the requirements of your potential school.

If you love painting in watercolours and are looking for more creative challenges, this would be a perfect fit ! Let’s explore a huge range of possibilities that go beyond the basics. We will create artworks based on various subjects with a good mix & match techniques using some other media like ink, oil pastels, gouache, etc. Focus will be on creating dynamic works, developing a sense of composition and colour using some contemporary methods and experimental techniques.

Experience painting a traditional flower of autumn and simple landscapes (mountains, water, trees, etc.). Elements of composition; a fun and often used, traditional method of creating mountains called the ‘wrinkled paper technique’; using ‘bad brushes’ to paint rough terrain. Beginners will learn the important fundamentals to produce simple, classic ink works in calligraphy and beginner-level subject painting. Those with previous experience will be encouraged to progress to more complex compositions. Each student can expect one-on-one assistance to advance along their painting journey. Modern sculptors are able to use mold making to create plaques, wax creations and candles, realistic museum pieces, movie props and prosthetic limbs. Join printmaker Tina Petrovicz in this 9-session course, introducing to a variety of monotype techniques, both with and without a press. You will explore the use of different types of tools and materials for mark making, that combine aspects of painting and drawing to produce a print. Learn to paint some beautiful landscapes/florals/animals from different provinces of our lovely home country Canada. Along with watercolours, some tools like inks, pens, markers, pastels, etc. will be used to create the character, mood of the place and interesting textural effects. Both – traditional and experimental styles of watercolour handling will be explored. Paintings will be done from photographs, which will be provided by email along with some drawings and info on technique to be used, a day prior to the class. This 1-day workshop in gesture, or speed figure drawing explores the laying in of the action, form and pose of a model in a short period of time. Both charcoal and ink offer fluidity and speed in capturing figures, yet offer different expressions, feelings, and emotions. Ultimately, the goal is to study the figure and how it moves. This workshop attempts to simplify human form and its complexities and allows students of all levels to develop their own unique way as artists with two diverse mediums and techniques. (Nude model)

Do you get excited about collecting ancient pebbles of different shapes, sizes, and colours? Here’s your chance to actually do something with one of them! Bring what you have to class or choose from my very large box and we will create a riveted pebble pendant that you can proudly wear. Using diamond encrusted drill bits, students will drill through their pebble and then fabricate with sterling silver wire and tubing to create their pendant.
Water casting is the art of melting metal to its molten form and then pouring it into water. This shocks the metal, creating spontaneous forms and unusual shapes. In this workshop we learn how to melt fine silver scrap, pour metal into water, and fabrication methods. Silver scraps can be cast into new and wondrous forms. Students will choose their favourite water cast piece and incorporate it into a ring, using the process of fusing. Once you ring is made you will be able to choose your favourite colour of enamel and learn how to add enamel to the inside of your water cast component and how to torch fire it.
Participants will complete TWO projects from start to finish:
• Silver Riveted Pebble Pendant
• Fine Silver Water Cast Ring with Enamel

Post-Impressionists extended Impressionism whilst rejecting its limitations: they continued using vivid colours, often with thick application of paint, and real-life subject matter. Among the nascent generation of artists responding to Impressionism were Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh. They could not have known the impact on expressionism that their art would have. The rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour of their paintings had a far-reaching influence in the 20th century and beyond. With this generation of masters as our inspiration, this workshop will focus on the elements that made modernism possible, colour and design having a certain independence from subject matter. Whatever your style and preferred medium, a lot can be learned from the post-Impressionists.

In this half-day workshop students will be introduced to basic clay relief sculpting, and the use of underglazes as a paint medium. You will learn how to blend underglaze colours, and upon completion of a multicolor slab, how to trim and cutout the artwork for framing. Learn hand stitching that can be used to decorate and embroider on paper or canvas. Great for seasonal cards, mixed media, handmade books, small artworks, collage, and more. In this half-day workshop, using a simple 12” x 16" wooden panel and chalk paint, participants will learn step-by-step how to paint a charming peony, or other beloved flower. Students will also learn how to create a rustic vintage-looking finish, using sandpaper, paint, and wax.
