Register
This course takes place at the Beaverbrook Community Centre: 4 Beaverbrook Rd, Kanata, ON K2K 1L1
For students who have some experience drawing the portrait in graphite or charcoal, this course is an opportunity to learn to work in different media. In this course, we’ll learn about three of the traditional techniques for rendering a portrait. We’ll start with the “trois crayons” technique, first used in the Renaissance and popular in the 18th century. Next, we will turn our attention to pen and ink, and look to the artists of the 19th century for inspiration. Finally, we’ll have an introduction to working in oils using a limited palette, with Zorn as our inspiration. We’ll learn about each of the techniques and try some practice exercises, and then we’ll have the opportunity to work from a live model and create a portrait using each technique. Please note that we’ll be using water-miscible oils for this course; recommended brands and colours will be included on the supply list.
