Sketching to Drawing II / Du croquis au dessin II - Intro/Inter (B)
Register This class looks at the importance of sketching and its use in developing drawings, paintings and other works. We will look at and develop hand-eye coordination in relation to sketching and explore elements of drawing and composition. We will work from still life and figure models, as well as look for inspiration from photos and sketches to create our own work. Students will have the opportunity to work with different materials and focus on the materials that best suit their projects. This class is designed to help you develop confidence in your art and to have fun. This course welcomes new and returning students. (1 live model included)

Register Using a model, various exercises will be used to improve your drawing skills in regards to proportion, movement, balance and composition. Learn to do figure drawing in large format (26” x 40”), capturing gesture and expression. Observation techniques and anatomy will be integrated into your artistic approach to figure drawing. Register This course will expand into the rich and wonderful range of effects that are possible with oil paint. Classes are structured around genres in contemporary art and contextualized through historical examples. The genres and themes are explored through direct observation and hands on experience of materials and processes. Techniques include: dry brush, scumbling, wet brush, impasto, layering using transparencies, basic colour theory, glazing, sfumato, hard edge and blending. Register Want to learn to paint, or are you stuck in a rut? This course is designed for both beginners as well as students with experience. We will explore simplifying a photograph through various options: the use of a limited palette, different sizes of canvas, how to feel and observe nature. We will also be working on spontaneity, seeing light, turning a dull photo into an exciting painting. Register This course will give students the opportunity to work in clay, wax or mold making with the assistance, feedback and directions of an instructor. Chip Carving: Intro to Wood Carving - Intro
Register This course allows students to develop drawing and wood carving skills and some elements of construction and assemblage. During the classes the students will learn: various techniques of carving with both hand tools and contemporary wood sculpture practice, basic cutting and joining techniques, treatment of wood surfaces, interior and exterior installation, wood coloring, relief and 3D carving techniques, the use and inclusion of found objects and materials, such as metal, plastics, driftwood, etc. Thereafter the emphasis will be on giving each student a chance to develop in a direction which is suitable for their own abilities and aspirations and also allows for the input/development of more personal and creative ideas.

Register Traditional and alternative medicine is increasingly recognizing the health benefits of engaging in creative activities. This course is designed for those who are seeking a gentle approach to artmaking in a relaxed environment. Mandala making, intuitive painting, Zen drawing and more will be explored. These are contemplative and meditative exercises with an emphasis on the calming aspect of art making rather than the technical. Come to relax and to de-stress. Course content will be adapted to returning (intermediate) students to complement and to advance their understanding, knowledge and experience of art materials, and approaches to self-learning and expression. Some supplies included in course fee.

Drawing Marathon - All Levels
Register Inspired by the New York Studio School and RISD drawing marathon intensives, this class will challenge students to commit themselves to the practice of drawing for a 10-5 work day. The class begins by investigating core fundamentals of contour line, value, weight, and mark making. Through a whirlwind of fast paced exercises, the drawing intensive class dives into more complex assignments and explorations. Students, either confident and advanced or beginners, will be forced to step out of their comfort zones and abandon ego and look at their own drawing and art as if they were a stranger to the process. By the end of the class, students will have been through a vast gamut of activities that they will undoubtedly have a profound confidence in their drawing fundamentals and ability to assess composition with an advanced degree of mark making, history of value, and composition.

Register In the tradition of The Artist’s Way, by American author Julia Cameron, this exciting weekend workshop will introduce painting as a jumping-off point for realizing one’s full creative potential in all areas of life. Using brushstrokes instead of words, participants will create a painting journal that relies on improvisation and imagination to overcome obstacles and find new solutions that often seem out of reach. Through a series of exercises that emphasize improvisation and risk-taking, participants will learn how to quiet their inner critics and strengthen their creativity. Fibre Art: 3D Flowers - Intro
Register In this workshop, participants will learn some wet felting techniques along with the simple art of dry needle felting. Students will be introduced to different types of wool, and needle weights. The instructor will also discuss basic elements of design such as texture, and colour theory. For this workshop, students are encouraged to bring a photograph or a sketch as a reference for their project. Students are encouraged to bring small objects such as beads, old earrings, or a broach to embellish their work. Students are also welcome to bring in their own roving (wool for felting).

Intro to Woodcarving / Intro à la sculpture sur bois - Intro (B)
Register This workshop is to initiate the students to the various forms of woodcarving through theory, display, and demonstration. Woodcarving such as carving in the round, relief carving, chip carving, and caricature carving will be covered. Topics such as the theory of trees, wood selection for carving, gluing, and clamping of wood, all of the tooling, and many other additional aides required will be discussed to fully understand what is required to perform various types of woodcarving. This will be an highly informative workshop, ideal for anyone seeking to learn to carve. Note: For a hands on experience of woodcarving, a 10-session course titled «Relief Woodcarving» will be offered next fall.
