This indoor workshop will allow us to explore many varieties of landscape and outdoor environments, ranging from vast panoramic scenes (mountains, sea, and sky) to more small-scale views of forests and foliage. The student will acquire a discipline in working from thumbnails derived from photographs or sketches. We will explore effective cropping and composition, as well as pictorial devices for capturing light, atmosphere, and mood. Abstract Painting for Beginners (Fri, 1 pm - 4 pm)
This course is designed for the absolute beginner painter who is inquisitive about colours and abstraction.
We will examine colours in relation to one another and will experiment in painting Non-figurative Art. We will paint in acrylics using non-traditional tools such as spatulas, sponges, rollers and card board. Japanese Painting: Sumi-e (Thurs, 6 - 8 pm)
The art of painting with the Oriental Brush is a tradition that has existed for more than one thousand years. Learn and appreciate the “Way of the Brush” using contemporary techniques for Western students, and based upon the Breathing Brush Method, first developed in Ottawa by my Sumi-e artist and teacher, Mme Tomoko Kodama.  This course is open to all levels of experience, as teaching is geared towards beginner and advanced alike. For beginners, this program will give you the important fundamentals to produce simple, classic ink works in calligraphy and beginner-level object painting. Intermediate to advanced students will be given new ways to develop their painting techniques further. Each student can expect one-on-one assistance to advance along their painting journey.

Lithography (Tues, 6:30 - 9:30 pm)
Lithography is a planographic printmaking technique that does not depend on the relief of the printmaking block. Lithography enables printmakers to print lines and tones drawn with a pencil, a drawing stick and brushes. Lithography captures the fresh, dynamic drawn mark. We will be using stone lithography.
Because the lithographic process includes waiting times, students will be able to explore other techniques such as linocut, collograph and plexiglass engraving as well.

Children's Book Illustration (Sun, 1 - 4 pm)
Students will illustrate their own children’s book in the style and medium of their choice. They will write their own story or adapt one already known. The goal is to have a full-size sample ("dummy") book by the end of the course. Part of each class will include teaching and evaluations by the teacher and class discussions of each person's project.

Students should bring samples of any final artwork they might have done (digital form is fine) and especially any drawing notebook with their sketches if they have any. A book for taking notes and making sketches and pencils would be useful. Students are encouraged to bring in published children's books new or old that they like or dislike for discussion.

ABC's of Drawing for the Beginner ( Fri, 9:30am - 12:30pm)
In this beginner drawing course students will draw from every day subjects of still life, the model, self-portraits, and photographs.
Each class will tap into art history and examine some drawing theories by modern masters such as Cezanne, Picasso, Matisse and many more.
Using basic materials such as pencils, charcoal and pastels students will built their basic drawing skills, exercising some old and new techniques while enjoying the artistic playfulness as seen in Picasso's works, the model use as in Matisse's drawings as well as the still life compositions in the works of Cezanne's.
