Individual coaching will be provided, based on each student’s needs and goals, with students welcome to work in the medium of their choice. The sessions will primarily involve live models and include demonstrations of the instructor’s techniques.

The Ancient Technique of Icon Painting, Intro-adv: Tues, 6 - 9 pm
Register In this course, students of all levels of artistic skills will create egg-tempera paintings by exploring forgotten medieval techniques of making Byzantine icons. We will learn how to apply gold leaf on handcrafted wood-panels and mix pigments with home-made emulsion and gesso. We will also learn how and why these ancient artistic methods influenced contemporary art and visual culture. For this reason, Byzantine art theory of color, drawing, and composition will be used to discover a new artistic medium and mode seeing images for creative self-expression. This will be done first via a series of exercises to understand the steps of painting exemplary Byzantine icons. In following this historical art form, students will next paint a “personal icon” on a wood-panel based on images and visual composition of their choice.

Digital Photography: Beyond the Basics II, Wed, 6 - 9 pm
Register This course is designed for those of you who are comfortable with the functions of your camera. We will focus on aspects that have an impact on your images both inside and outside of the camera. We will explore ways of ‘seeing’ the image before you even touch your shutter. By understanding how the camera can ‘see’ the world, your imagery will shine.

This is a hands-on course, so bring your digital camera, manual, tri-pod, a small pad of paper & pen. Dress for the weather as the instructor has been known for taking his classes out in various conditions.

Just as a visual artist uses pencil, paint and paper to interpret and create an image, so can textile artists with needle, thread and fabric. Looking at line, pattern, texture and colour, you will ‘draw’ and ‘paint’ an image of your choice from the natural world using hand embroidery techniques. This workshop is about honing your eye and creative expression through stitch!

Participants must come to the workshop with a mobile phone that can take photos for interpretation. A pair of sharp scissors is recommended.
