Canadian Artists, Then and Now: Painting with an Emphasis on Printmaking: Ages 8 - 9
Register Let’s explore the unique viewpoint of Canada expressed by Canadian artists. From early views of landscape and settlers, to the more contemporary points of view, we will learn from such artists as Paul Kane, Tom Thomson, Alex Colville, and Mary Pratt. With an emphasis on painting and printmaking techniques, we will study form and space, light and shadow, colour, line, texture and the hidden language of art. Children's Memoir Writing: Ages 8 - 12
Register This course will explore the art of storytelling through words and drawing, with a focus on children’s personal stories. Concepts such as metaphor and simile will be examined through fun and collaborative writing prompts, followed by drawing exercises which translate literary images into visual ones. Children will leave the course with their stories beautifully presented and preserved in words and pictures. The focus of the course is drawing and writing, but bookmaking and calligraphy techniques will also be covered.

Trade Secrets from Great Painters: Drawing and Painting: Ages 10 - 12
Register In this course we will move from working in black and white to using colour expressively. Drawing exercises will focus on creating volume using a variety of shading techniques. Colour, using a variety of media: pastels, watercolour and acrylic paint, will be introduced as the course progresses. We will learn from the techniques of artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Matisse, and Rembrandt. A session with a model and a tour of the National Gallery is included.

Cartooning and Animation (B): Ages 10 - 12

These courses are designed for students at all skill levels who want to draw seriously. Students will learn and practice drawing techniques and discover cartooning and animated cartoon secrets. Students will apply their creativity to the production of comic strips, gag panels, caricatures, illustrations, animated cartoons (hand-drawn and stop-motion techniques) and comic books.
Each season includes lessons on drawing hands (realistic and cartoon-style), the human figure and animal characters.

Ces cours sont accessibles aux élèves de tous les niveaux d’habileté qui veulent dessiner de façon sérieuse. Les élèves apprendront et pratiqueront les techniques du dessin et ils découvriront les secrets de la BD et du dessin animé. Les élèves feront preuve de créativité en réalisant des projets de bandes dessinées, cases à farces, caricatures, illustrations, dessins animés et des planches de BD.

Register In a comfortable studio setting, we begin by drawing from observation: still life, portraits and the human figure. Students transform their drawing knowledge into painting by using colours and techniques through a process of repetition and abstraction. We will work in a range of materials including acrylics, charcoal and collage. This drawing and painting course is inspired by the masters of the early twentieth century. (Picasso, Matisse, Cezanne etc.)

A tour of the National Gallery of Canada to view works by contemporary and modern masters is included. All skill levels are welcome to register.

Portfolio Development: Ages 13 - 15
Register Students attend stimulating studio sessions designed to assist them in preparing and developing art works for a portfolio presentation. The instructor guides the students towards fulfilling the requirements specified for admission to the secondary school curriculum for which they are applying. Sessions include drawing a still life, a self-portrait using pencil and pastel media and coloured portrait studies. Classes also include figure drawing from a live model, acrylic painting with instruction in colour theory and brushstroke, and sculpture. The class is fast paced and alternates between terms to accommodate continuing students.
