Get Inspired by an Artist: ages 6 to 7
Painting / Printmaking Emphasis
Join Tami Galili Ellis for a vibrant winter course designed to assist the children in creating art.
In this positive and fun environment children will explore various materials such as clay, collage, ink, charcoal and paint. They will learn to expand on their skills of sculpting, drawing, and painting in many media. During each term we will look for inspiration by exploring ideas of various artists such as: Mondrian, Picasso, Matisse, Cezanne and many more. Through a series of in-class projects kids will learn some essential components of visual art such as line, colour, and composition, while maintaining an emphasis on the creative process.

Dutch Artists 16th - 20th Century: ages 8 to 9
Painting / Printmaking Emphasis
Throughout the ages, the Netherlands has produced some very influential artists: Pieter Brueghel, Rembrandt, Jan Vermeer, Vincent Van Gogh, and Piet Mondrian to name a few. We will use these artists as inspiration for our study of painting and printmaking techniques, and use their subject matter as a starting point for our own work. A visit to the Albrecht Durer exhibit at the National Gallery will be a highlight.

Drawing and Painting on the Easel: ages 10 to 12

Join Tami Galili Ellis for a vibrant winter course full of art! Have fun developing ideas and creating new artworks. Get inspired by great modern and contemporary artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Van Gogh, Georgia O'Keefe and more. Explore traditional and nontraditional techniques, expand on drawing skills and learn new applications! Working on the easel, students will expand their artistic boundaries while exploring a range of materials such as charcoal, oil pastels, pencils and paint. Through a series of in-class projects, working from still life and the model we will learn some essential components of visual art such as line, colour and composition. Cartooning and Animation: ages 10 to 12

These courses are designed for students at all skill levels who want to draw seriously. Students will learn and practice drawing techniques and discover cartooning and animated cartoon secrets. Students will apply their creativity to the production of comic strips, gag panels, caricatures, illustrations, animated cartoons (hand-drawn and stop-motion techniques) and comic books.
Each term will include a lesson on drawing hands (realistic and cartoon-style), a class-project animated cartoon and the production of a class-project comic book.
Ces cours sont pour les élèves de tous les niveaux d’habileté qui veulent dessiner de façon sérieuse. Les élèves apprendront et pratiqueront les techniques du dessin et ils découvriront les secrets du dessin animé. Les élèves feront preuve de créativité en réalisant des projets de bandes dessinées, cases à farces, caricatures, illustrations, dessins animés et des BD.

Understanding sculpture requires an understanding of how shape affects the space around it and how light and shadow play across various materials. In this class we will build sculptures of wood, fabric, glue, paper, clay and various industrial materials, such as plastic and metal. Students will be challenged to generate projects that are based on ideas that are of importance to them. Incorporating color, surface texture and humour, this class is intended to be serious fun! Portfolio Development: ages 13 to 15
Students attend stimulating studio sessions to prepare, develop, and organize art works for a portfolio presentation. During weekly classes the instructor will guide students towards fulfilling the portfolio requirements for admission to a secondary school curriculum. Our activities include drawing a still life in colour, drawing a self-portrait using pencil, drawing or painting a portrait in a chosen medium, a practice session in gestural figure drawing of the live model, and creating a sculpture. The class includes instruction in colour theory, acrylic painting and brush stroke.

Register As we enter spring and warmer weather, students will walk in the market area and discover the sights and smells of the new season. Spring means plants and flowers and creatures in our gardens. We will paint these images with watercolour, acrylic and tempura paint. We will go to the Tulip Festival and translate what we see using various printing techniques. We will use cardboard, rubber tile and styrofoam with inks and paints to create a festival series of prints.

Register This course will explore the art of storytelling through words and drawing, with a focus on children’s personal stories. Concepts such as metaphor and simile will be examined through fun and collaborative writing prompts, followed by drawing exercises which translate literary images into visual ones. Children will leave the course with their stories beautifully presented and preserved in words and pictures. The focus of the course is drawing and writing, but bookmaking and calligraphy techniques will also be covered.

Register In a comfortable studio setting, we begin by drawing portraits, self portraits and the human figure. Students transform their portraits through a process of abstraction, inspired by cubism and the masters of the early twentieth century.
We will work in a range of materials including acrylics, charcoal and collage. A tour of the National Gallery of Canada to view works by contemporary and modern masters is included. All skill levels are welcome to register.
