Embracing the challenge of working from the live nude model via a series of exercises and demonstrations, the course focuses on the rib cage, pelvis and thigh, knee and lower leg, foot, shoulder girdle, arm, hand, neck and head. Using the traditional tools of charcoal, nib and ink, students will acquire the practical knowledge of the old masters in seeing light and form to shape and inform a personal, artistic approach to the human body.

The Ancient Technique of Icon Painting, Intro-adv, Mon, 6 - 9 pm, start date: 09/12/2022
Register
In this course, students of all levels of artistic skills will create egg-tempera paintings by exploring forgotten medieval techniques of making Byzantine icons. We will learn how to apply gold leaf on handcrafted wood-panels and mix pigments with home-made emulsion and gesso. We will also learn how and why these ancient artistic methods influenced contemporary art and visual culture. For this reason, Byzantine art theory of color, drawing, and composition will be used to discover a new artistic medium and mode seeing images for creative self-expression. This will be done first via a series of exercises to understand the steps of painting exemplary Byzantine icons. In following this historical art form, students will paint next a “personal icon” on a wood-panel based on images and visual composition of their chose.

Linear drawing and sketching are the base on lines and an excellent drawing technique and a way of gaining hand control over the line, honing fine motor skills.
Tonal drawing, more often used by painters because their perception of colour and tone, is often based on play of various masses of a tone different in saturation and configuration.
And, of course, there is a complex approach to drawing with the use of both techniques.
Succession in drawing will result in certain benefits: eye training, ability to catch movement, proportions and composition at once, without prolonged and sometimes tiresome process.

The beauty of line, the wonder of pattern, the dynamics of colour, the subtly of form. Artists gravitate to different printmaking processes because they express different elements of art. This print class introduces students to a variety of printmaking techniques including relief (linocut), intaglio (drypoint and collograph) and planographic (polyester plate lithography), enabling them to explore their own imagery through the versatility of print.
We will use soya-based inks (with the exception of polyester plate lithography), which clean up with soap and water.

Lithography is a planographic printmaking technique that does not depend on the relief of the printmaking block. Lithography captures the fresh, dynamic drawn mark. Stone lithography enables printmakers to print lines and tones drawn with a pencil, drawing stick and brushes; polyester plate lithography uses permanent marker to create the drawn image. With some computer savvy, artists can use their photographs to create and print images with polyester plates.
