The ABC's of Drawing for the Beginner, Intro: Fri, 9:30 am -12:30 pm
Students will create indoor and outdoor (weather permitting) projects using a variety of materials while sharpening their observation skills. Each class will be set up with either a model or still life and students will build and expand on existing painting and drawings skills. Students will be introduced to dry mediums like charcoal, conté, pastels and wet mediums, such as acrylics, inks and watercolours. In this course, students will familiarize themselves with the 3D structure of the human figure starting with skeleton and portrait studies followed by two sessions of short-term sketches, with a focus on movement and proportions. CLASS FULL: Figure Drawing and the Timeless Anatomical Principles of the Great Masters, Intro-adv: Wed, 6 - 9 pm

Suitable for all levels of artistic skills, this course analyzes the human form by drawing from medieval techniques of crosshatching found in works of such masters as DaVinci, Durer, Holbein, Raphael, and Rembrandt. Embracing the challenge of working from the live nude model via a series of exercises and demonstrations, the course focuses on the rib cage, pelvis and thigh, knee and lower leg, foot, shoulder girdle, arm, hand, neck and head. Using the traditional tools of charcoal, nib and ink, students will acquire the practical knowledge of the old masters in seeing light and form to shape and inform a personal, artistic approach to the human body.

The Ancient Technique of Icon Painting, Intro-adv: Tues, 6 - 9 pm
In this course, students of all levels of artistic skills will create egg-tempera paintings by exploring forgotten medieval techniques of making Byzantine icons. We will learn how to apply gold leaf on handcrafted wood-panels and mix pigments with home-made emulsion and gesso. We will also learn how and why these ancient artistic methods influenced contemporary art and visual culture.  For this reason, Byzantine art theory of color, drawing, and composition will be used to discover a new artistic medium and mode seeing images for creative self-expression.  This will be done first via a series of exercises to understand the steps of painting exemplary Byzantine icons. In following this historical art form, students will paint next a “personal icon” on a wood-panel based on images and visual composition of their chose.

Register This creative six hour workshop is an introduction to letterpress printing on a Vandercook press. You will learn basic typesetting and how to operate the press.

In this class you can make your personalized, original Christmas cards, thank you cards, events cards or even your business cards! Beneath The Surface - Mixed Media, ages 4 - 6: Sat, 1 - 3 pm
Kids will venture into the limitless ways of seeing as through the lens of an imaginary microscope, revealing depth and texture.

This course focuses on supporting creative self-expression because ‘your ideas are brilliant!’ Each class is structured in three parts: A short, interactive art ’game’ to practice observation and creative problem-solving; a demonstration exercise focused on a specific technique, followed by a creative project applying the technique. Media explorations include: pencil, oil pastel, acrylic paint, clay, wax, fabric, and printmaking. A field trip is included.

The influence of the Roman Empire was enormous, and has an impact on western culture today. Roman art and architecture, daily life and myth will inspire our work this term. Creating numerous projects in clay will allow students to build their proficiency over several weeks. Concepts of colour, composition, texture and negative space will be practiced in drawing, painting, collage and printmaking.

These courses are designed for students at all skill levels who want to draw seriously. Students will learn and practice drawing techniques and discover cartooning and animated cartoon secrets. Students will apply their creativity to the production of comic strips, single panel comics, caricatures, illustrations, animated cartoons (hand-drawn and stop-motion techniques) and comic pages.
Each season includes lessons on drawing hands (natural and cartoon-style), the human figure and animal characters.
