Street and Travel Photography, Intro
Register In 1967, Gary Winograd, Lee Friedlander and Diane Arbus exhibited their work in the Museum of Modern Art’s exhibition “New Documents”. Curated by John Szarkowski, this exhibition of 94 black and white photographs changed the course of how we viewed documentary photography. Their work crossed boundaries between photojournalism and fine art as their personal style differentiated their imagery. Their vision motivated a generation of photographers to transform the reality of everyday urban life.

This course will balance viewing the work of seasoned Canadian photographers as well as an open critique of student's work. Workshop exercises will concentrate on improving one’s seeing and the recognition of potential of any given subject. One will be introduced to the simplicity of using one lens, where pre-visualization of one's subject and their surroundings becomes a faster response. A wide range of issues of photographing people in an uncontrolled environment will be discussed, including ethics and the law. Beyond photographing people on the street, photographing urban landscapes both in the day and night will be included in the class. Workshop highlight is travelling to Montreal for a full day of street work.
