The Ancient Technique of Icon Painting, Intro: Wed, 6 - 9 pm
Register In this course, students of all levels of artistic skills will create egg-tempera paintings by exploring forgotten medieval techniques of making Byzantine icons. We will learn how to apply gold leaf on handcrafted wood-panels and mix pigments with home-made emulsion and gesso. We will also learn how and why these ancient artistic methods influenced contemporary art and visual culture. For this reason, Byzantine art theory of color, drawing, and composition will be used to discover a new artistic medium and mode seeing images for creative self-expression. This will be done first via a series of exercises to understand the steps of painting exemplary Byzantine icons. In following this historical art form, students will next paint a “personal icon” on a wood-panel based on images and visual composition of their choice.

Contemporary Printmaking, intro-adv: Mon, 6:30 - 9:30 pm
Register Contemporary printmaking is a class for all levels of expertise. The main goal is to learn the fundaments of printmaking, from technique to appreciation in an open and welcoming environment. The class works as an open studio allowing the students to work in their own pace and allowing me to work one on one. The techniques to be explored are Relief printmaking, (woodcuts and linocuts), drypoint and introduction to etching and aquatint, and for more advanced students, intro to lithography.

This class is great for beginners in printmaking as well as experienced printmaking artists with non-typical ideas or people interested in pop art.
The idea of the class is to integrate printmaking techniques and qualities in your personal work. Unlike other print classes, this course is more focused on the aesthetic and visual possibilities of printmaking, and not the “hard rules”. This class is not about what you can't do but is about all the different approaches of printmaking techniques

Register Lithography is a planographic printmaking technique (does not depend on the relief of the printmaking block). Lithography captures the fresh, dynamic drawn mark. Stone lithography enables printmakers to print lines and tones drawn with a pencil, a drawing stick and brushes; polyester plate lithography uses permanent marker to create the drawn image. With some computer savvy, artists can use their photographs to create images on polyester plates.
