The paper gets removed with water and gently rubbing away the excess, leaving on the image! This can take some practice, so best to do a few tests.

Register This course takes place at the Beaverbrook Community Centre: 4 Beaverbrook Rd, Kanata, ON K2K 1L1
Main room, first floor

For students who have some experience drawing the portrait in graphite or charcoal, this course is an opportunity to learn to work in different media. In this course, we’ll learn about three of the traditional techniques for rendering a portrait. We’ll start with the “trois crayons” technique, first used in the Renaissance and popular in the 18th century. Next, we will turn our attention to pen and ink, and look to the artists of the 19th century for inspiration. Finally, we’ll have an introduction to working in oils using a limited palette, with Zorn as our inspiration. We’ll learn about each of the techniques and try some practice exercises, and then we’ll have the opportunity to work from a live model and create a portrait using each technique. Please note that we’ll be using water-miscible oils for this course; recommended brands and colours will be included on the supply list.

Drawing & Painting for Relaxation | Dessin et Peinture Pour La Relaxation (Mon 6pm - 9pm | Intro)
Register Finally! It has been scientifically proven that any kind of art making is good for your mental health. Having said that, this course will introduce drawing and painting (and maybe a little bit of crafting) materials and techniques to get you started whether you choose to pursue art more seriously or simply to enjoy when in need. This is a no pressure, relax and enjoy the process of creating class. All you need to bring is a pencil, an eraser, a sketchbook and your willingness to think outside the canvas.

FULL: Painting: Simply Green (Sat/Sun June 13/14 9am - 4pm | All Levels)
Eco enjoyment. Linger over your summer memories for a day of painting green, letting the landscape come towards us in a drifting daydreaming state, reverie. This sitting quietly in nature and “seeing off the edge of things” as Emily Carr said is particularly useful to artists. Learn from Emily Carr’s ways of seeing, of being in nature and of painting. Simply Green is a colour workshop with two lessons. “Simply” learn to simplify the landscape that you see – how to de-complicate its confusion and abundant bits of nature, how to find the underlying organization of nature’s form, the abstraction, for a gentle visionary response to the greenscape. The colour lesson is “green”. Green is a challenging colour: how to make all that green look good and - well, not too green. . Learn how to organize your colour seeing and to mix these greens from your yellows and blues. Learn about the wide range of green pigments available that express the nuances of nature from cool to warm, muted to vibrant. Media of choice. All levels.

The Post-Impressionists (Sat/Sun June 6/7 9:30am - 4:30pm | All Levels)
Register Post-Impressionists extended Impressionism whilst rejecting its limitations: they continued using vivid colours, often with thick application of paint and real-life subject matter. Among the nascent generation of artists responding to Impressionism were Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh. They could not have known the impact on expressionism that their art would have. The rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour of their paintings had a far-reaching influence in the 20th century and beyond. With this generation of masters as our inspiration, this workshop will focus on the elements that made modernism possible, colour and design having a certain independence from subject matter. Whatever your style and preferred medium, a lot can be learned from the post-impressionists.

Focus On Painting | Emphase en Peinture (13-16 Years/Ans Sun 10am - 1pm)
Register This class will focus primarily on watercolours, but will also introduce mixed media, and of course some drawing technique, as it is the basis for all things art. Though most classes will introduce a specific technique or project, students will be encouraged to bring their own ideas or projects to work on so that they can receive feedback and find ways to improve.
