Painting the Magic in Reality: Alex Colville and Lawren Harris - All Levels
Evoke the timeless and the temporal. Meld the extraordinary with the ordinary. Showcased in two exquisite exhibitions this year at the NGC and AGO, Alex Colville’s magic realism and Lawren Harris’ stark realism and abstractions are powerful examples of expressive art. Drawing from this inspiration, learn how to make great art with composed, clear precision. Use constructional tension: suspending the shapes of your subject on a net of underlying organization. Create unifying sight lines to invite the viewer into the image. Engage your viewer using directive colour and key intersections. Paint in your own style, and choose between a realist subject or geometric abstraction. Acrylic or oil (no solvent).

Urban Sketching
Register Urban sketches are observational drawings done on location in urban environments such as cafes, parks, on buses, in movie theatres, etc. Urban sketching combines drawing (in any medium and style) with a desire to capture and communicate authentic moments, scenes and stories from contemporary urban life.

This class will cover the fundamentals of urban sketching, from composing and sizing a drawing on the relatively small surface of a sketchbook page to selecting elements from the observed environment to communicate a mood or vision. Along the way we will also cover:

- how urban sketching differs from sketching as process (design sketching) and tourism sketches
- helpful drawing techniques for laying down figures and environments
- how to choose angles and topics of visual interest in order to get the most from your subject
- how to tweak the "truth" of a scene so as to artfully emphasize certain elements (this distinguishes urban sketching from visual journalism)

Whenever possible, we will also touch on the history of the plein air sketch, studying examples from art history including the sketches of Durer, Rembrandt and Watteau through to some examples of urban sketches today. The emphasis, however, will be on urban sketching practice in real locations around Ottawa.

Prerequisite: some familiarity with drawing and sketching. You do not have to be an expert! Enthusiasm and a desire to learn are most important.

Required FOR THE FIRST CLASS: portable sketchbook no larger than 8 x 10 inches. Smaller is preferred (ideal size is between 2x3 and 6x8). Portable drawing media (pen, pencil, brushpen or pencil crayon preferred). Avoid overly messy or smudgy media such as charcoal, chalk and paint. Watercolour may be acceptable if it is compact and tidy; for example, watercolour pencils or a small watercolour box.

How the classes work:

Each class, we will go to a new location near the school to sketch. We will sketch outdoors as much as possible, taking advantage of the visual variety in the Byward Market and surrounding areas. Homework after each class will be to create 3 to 5 additional sketches from the same place or a different place. At the beginning of each class, students will show their favourite sketches from the past week and the class will appreciatively critique them based on the practical and theoretical points so far covered.

Register In this class we will explore the concept of pop art through popular images using printmaking techniques; we will develop personal styles using techniques such as linocut, woodcut, etching, mixed media and collage.

This class is great for beginners in printmaking as well as experienced printmaking artists with non-typical ideas or people interested in pop art.
The idea of the class is to integrate printmaking techniques and qualities in your personal work. Unlike other print classes, this course is more focused on the aesthetic and visual possibilities of printmaking, and not the “hard rules”. This class is not about what you can't do, but is about all the different approaches of printmaking techniques.

Oil or Acrylic Landscape Painting: Growing Your Art - Inter/Adv
Register To grow in art we need to challenge ourselves. We need to try different palettes, canvas sizes. We need to simplify. Since we live in a northern climate, ‘plein air’ painting is more limited, making it necessary to work from photos as our primate source of inspiration. We will try limited palettes, different sizes, palette knife painting, all in an effort to achieve less detail and more painterly paintings. There will be class demos, and if desired, time to work on your own projects with one-on-one guidance. We really only have a short time together each term, but some things that are covered throughout a year are: scumbling, brushwork, glazing and washes, colour harmony, perspective, reflections, clouds, rocks, and people in the landscape. Students will be encouraged to push their limits.
