Ottawa School of Art Orleans Gallery
The Ottawa School of Art is pleased to present “Losing Ground”, an exhibition of works by artist Juliana McDonald. The exhibition takes place from September 27, 2013 to October 20, 2013 at the Ottawa School of Art’s Orleans Gallery on the main floor of the Shenkman Arts Centre, Orleans. A meet the artist reception takes place on Sunday, September 29, 2013. All Welcome!
Losing Ground is the result of six years of daily walks through milkweed-overgrown farmland that has been threatened by the City of Ottawa’s Light Rail project. During her walks, McDonald researched the area’s habitat, recording seasonal changes and the cycles of local butterflies. This research, along with visual and textural references, City documents and personal musings are captured in the collages and photographs that make up the exhibition.
McDonald’s artwork reflects the possible loss of the abandoned farmland, now a breeding ground for Monarch butterflies, as urbanization encroaches on fragile environments. Her images evoke a sense of place and belonging, sadness for the loss of green space and, wonder at renewal in the face of adversity.
Juliana McDonald is a Canadian landscape artist whose work reflects a deep respect and concern for the natural environment. Her oil paintings and collages are strongly influenced by many years of canoeing and hiking in the Canadian Shield as well as daily walks in the woods close to her home in Ottawa. Subjects range from elusive skies, to reflective surfaces of water, to undulating rock and landforms. McDonald is a Fine Arts graduate from the University of Ottawa where she received an award for her high achievement. Her paintings can be found in private and corporate collections throughout Canada and the United States.
