Don't Be Afraid of the Darks: Portrait Drawing Using Light and Shadow, Intro: Tues, 6:30 - 9:30 pm
Register This course takes place at the Beaverbrook Community Centre: 4 Beaverbrook Rd, Kanata, ON K2K 1L1

In this course, we’ll use the centuries-old technique of chiaroscuro to draw a lifelike portrait. This technique, used by the old masters, is based on capturing the behavior of light as it falls across the subject. We will learn how to capture a likeness and create a sense of form by drawing accurate light and shadow shapes. Each week’s lesson will build on the previous one, as we learn about proportions and features. We’ll use photographs to practice what we learn, and then we’ll put it all together and draw a portrait from a live model.

Material List:
Sketch paper or sketch book for practice; I recommend a generous size like 18x24
Canson mi-teintes paper in Felt Grey or in any mid-grey (for week 6)
HB and 2B pencils
CarbOthello pastel pencils (by Stabilo) in Bistre (colour 635) and Titanium white (colour 100) or Derwent pastel pencils in Titanium White (P720) and Brown Earth (P550)

Botanical Illustrations: Florals, Fruits & Veggies (Watercolour) - Intro/Inter (THU, 1PM-4PM)
Register During this course, adjusted to the upcoming spring season, students are invited to explore practical and emotional benefits of depicting inanimate natural objects – such as plants, fruits (either local and totally exotic ones), leaves, acorns, conkers, and trees around Ottawa. Structures, forms, wondrous beauty of common pavement milk thistle, tufts of city moss, or some species of algae, alongside with orchard crab apples may be transformed into perfect sketches, or carefully rendered botanical illustrations. Every student will be able to build their own portfolio of hand-painted images, enhance their inner confidence and use these practical skills in painting and drawing for the further professional development.

Note: The instructor will share each week with the students some fresh fruits, vegetables or flowers as a reference for the exercises.

Van Gogh, Gauguin, and the Post-Impressionists - All Levels (SAT, 9:30AM-4:30PM)
Register Post-Impressionists extended Impressionism whilst rejecting its limitations: they continued using vivid colours, often with thick application of paint and real-life subject matter. Among the nascent generation of artists responding to Impressionism were Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh. They could not have known the impact on expressionism that their art would have. The rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour of their paintings had a far-reaching influence in the 20th century and beyond. With this generation of masters as our inspiration, this workshop will focus on the elements that made modernism possible, colour and design having a certain independence from subject matter. Whatever your style and preferred medium, a lot can be learned from the post-impressionists.

From Rembrandt to Renoir: Portraits, Classical and Modern - All Levels (SAT, 9:30AM-4:30PM)
Register Rembrandt’s portraits are regarded as some of the greatest creative triumphs in the wide field of portraiture. His self-portraits form a unique and intimate biography, in which the artist surveyed himself without vanity and with utmost sincerity. Renoir painted in pure impressionist style, suggesting the details through freely brushed touches, so that his figures softly fuse with one another and their surroundings. The warm sensuality of Renoir’s style has made his paintings some of the most well known master works in the history of art. Whether your interest is in classical or contemporary, join us for an inspired couple of Saturdays surrounded by Rembrandt and Renoir’s joint geniuses.

:FULL:The Ancient Technique of Icon Painting, Intro-adv, Wednesday, 6:30 - 9:30 pm
Register In this course, students of all levels of artistic skills will create egg-tempera paintings by exploring forgotten medieval techniques of making Byzantine icons. We will learn how to apply gold leaf on handcrafted wood-panels and mix pigments with home-made emulsion and gesso. We will also learn how and why these ancient artistic methods influenced contemporary art and visual culture. For this reason, Byzantine art theory of color, drawing, and composition will be used to discover a new artistic medium and mode seeing images for creative self-expression. This will be done first via a series of exercises to understand the steps of painting exemplary Byzantine icons. In following this historical art form, students will next paint a “personal icon” on a wood-panel based on images and visual composition of their choice.
