Artist Biography
Venezuelan-born Canadian artist Sonia Arenas has developed her body of work in painting, sculpture, photography and mixed media. She graduated from the Ottawa School of Art and has participated in several projects around different countries in the last 15 years, making a valuable contribution to visual art.
Life has taken Sonia to encounter many adventures between Canada, Europe and Venezuela. In these countries, she had the great opportunity to exhibit her paintings and work as an art advisor and teacher for children.
Demonstrating artistic inclinations since childhood, Sonia’s work has been constantly changing throughout her life, experiencing the soul and essence of the indigenous people to the human figure struggle of women in their leading role.
Artist Statement
Since I was a child, I always had a fascination for the individual as a human being, from the intimacy of their gaze to the morphology of their figure.
I have constantly observed every person who stumbles on my way. They always leave footprints that have an exciting story to tell. They are walking history.
In this context, I have developed my body of work on painting and mixed media based in the figure as a leading in the existence of human being.
In my portraits, the eyes of humans reflect a mixture of power, passion and intimacy that lead us to thoughts, dreams and intuitions.
I do not have one typical style in my paintings but you can recognize my “handwriting”. In my work, the mix of vibrant colors is like rhythmic pleasure. I paint the colors I feel without following strict rules. My pieces do not require higher explanations or speeches; an image says it all.
