Artist Statement

Inspired by photorealist Chuck Close, Mallory uses only black and white oil paints heightening the contrast between shadow and highlights in her work. Her subjects amplified facial expressions are what bring animation and dimensionality to this series, bridging her passion for portraiture and tone. ‘Portrayed” captures Mallory’s sheer joy of painting. Artist Biography Born and raised in Ottawa Ontario, Mallory Hanes will graduate from the Fine Arts Diploma program, Ottawa School of Art in the spring of 2019. Mallory is the recipient of the Lee Matasi scholarship in 2016, the Fritz Allgoewer scholarship in 2018 and the Laham-Tourbin Drawing and Painting scholarship in 2019. Embarking on her career as a studio artist in Manotick, portraits are a common thread throughout her work.
