Artist in Residence Maihaa K Rayne will be completing her term at the OSA ByWard Campus with a showing of her watercolour sketch paintings all created this year! Since Maihaa had not painted any watercolour paintings during the past 50 years, and only two when she was 18 – 19 years old, she is primarily self-taught in this medium. Maihaa was inspired by memories of going to the Ottawa Tulip Festival with her family and friends and her newborn daughter in 1977-1970, snapshots of tulips she took in late May of 2023 while revisiting Ottawa after 44 years, and also photographs taken by her son in 2021. Bryan David Anthony Backman-Beharry gave her permission to show ans well as work from his photos as “studies” for her new artworks.

Maihaa has “fond memories” of Ottawa and her successes in art between 1976 – 1980, when she had the married surname of Mary J. Backman-Beharry. You can see the 25″ h. x 200′ w. wall mural she designed and won the OSA Competition for The City of Ottawa in 1978, recently repainted, at The Tom Brown Arena, 141 Bayview Station Rd., Ottawa.

Maihaa Rayne previously taught Clay Modelling of the human figure as well as mixed media art classes for teens at the Ottawa School of Art at the former 150 Forward Avenue location in Ottawa for several years, up to 197, before the OSA moved to it’s present ByWard Market location. She was a student of Leanord Gerbrandt in Printmaking, as well as Gerry LaForce and Bruce Garner in wood and Stone Sculpture, plus Drawing for Sculpture at the earlier location.

MULTI-MEDIA: ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR PENCIL SKETCH, PAINTINGS, AND PHOTOGRAPHS OF TULIPS BY MAIHAA K RAYNE, (along with a few photographs by her son, Bryan D. A. Backman-Beharry, that were the inspiration for some of her watercolour sketches, paintings and mixed media artworks.
