(Ottawa, ON) August 22, 2022 – The Ottawa School of Art ByWard Market Campus is proud to present “Broken Pattern” « motif brisé » – an exhibition by Jude Griebel.  “Broken Pattern” « motif brisé » is on display from Thursday September 1 to Sunday October 2, 2022 at the Ottawa School of Art’s Gallery located on the main floor of the Downtown Campus at 35 George St., in the ByWard Market.

Admission is free.  Everyone welcome!

Jude Griebel (born Ottawa, Canada) is a contemporary sculptor working between Bergen, Alberta, Canada and New York City, USA. Using techniques such as carving, modeling, and constructing miniature elements, he creates intensively detailed figurative sculptures that visualize our entanglement with the surrounding world. In the works, landscapes, the species we affect, and the waste we create, coalesce in vivid forms that illustrate the reach of our impact and consumption habits. Both harbingers of ruin and agents of transformation, his works build on art historical traditions of the anthropomorphic body to reflect a planet in a state of crisis.

Griebel’s work has completed numerous residencies including Pioneer Works, New York; ISCP, New York; The Studios of MASS MoCA, North Adams and HALLE 14 Center for Contemporary Art, Leipzig. Recent exhibitions include the Art Gallery of Alberta, Canada; the International Museum of Surgical Science, Chicago; Galerie Sturm, Nuremberg; and the Spinnerei Archiv Massiv, Leipzig. Griebel’s work has been supported by major grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Canada Council for the Arts and he is a three-time recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant. His work has been collected internationally by institutions that include the Arsenal Contemporary Art, Montreal, the Frans Masereel Centrum, Kasterlee and the Volpert Foundation, New York.

Jude Griebel (né à Ottawa, Canada) est un sculpteur contemporain travaillant entre Bergen, Alberta, Canada et New York, États-Unis. En utilisant des techniques telles que la sculpture, le modelage et la construction d’éléments miniatures, il crée des sculptures figuratives intensément détaillées qui témoignent de notre enchevêtrement avec le monde environnant. Dans ses œuvres, les paysages, les espèces que nous affectons et les déchets que nous générons fusionnent en des formes vivantes qui illustrent la portée de notre impact et de nos habitudes de consommation. À la fois annonciatrices de perdition et agentes de transformation, ses œuvres reposent sur les traditions, dans l’histoire de l’art, du corps anthropomorphe pour refléter une planète en état de crise.
