Exhibition Title: “Beyond a Linear Entity” – 2018
The mere presence of a crow is a gift.
A timeless gift that offers a personal message.
A message of awakening to authenticity, transformation.
birth, life, death, rebirth…
In this most recent body of work, I continue to explore the balance between darkness and light, life/death/rebirth and how it is intertwined with the symbolism of the sacred crow as a spirit animal. A reflective practice of self and an acceptance for all that is within the darkness allows for an embrace and nurturing of all aspects of self, as this is what makes us whole. Out of darkness comes the light of a new day.
As a mixed media artist, Jojo is best known for her heart-felt installations often teetering in the directions of activism/awareness of injustices; mental health/stigma; dying/death/life, or representational works from shadow and/or spiritual practices. An encompassing of cross cultural and traditional experiences are at times subtly reflected in her work, as an intent to offer a moment of sacredness between viewer and artwork.
The physical making of her work includes combinations of diverse materials, found objects and organic matter, alongside paint, plaster, charcoal, wax, wood and wire. She aims to create, often with a little nudge, a sense of embrace within the installation space as well as offer a sense of depth within each individual piece, allowing each layer to hold within it, its own memory of how it came to be.
