Artist Statement:

Stage 2: The Construction of Ottawa’s Light Rail System

This series, Stage 2: The Construction of Ottawa’s Light Rail System, began with several trips to the stations in various stages of progression. The images became the source material for the paintings. The intention of the work was to capture the construction elements of the integration of a rail line an urban centre. The ongoing documentation would expose the forgotten elements associated with a major undertaking, creating paintings that engage the chaotic and functional components associated with construction. Through representational paintings, the exhibition captures that transitional period, aiming to document the temporality of construction; a constantly moving target.

The first iteration of the exhibition was shown at Wallspace Gallery in June 2020. Those images depicted the completed stations servicing the Confederation Line from Tunney’s Pasture to Blair Road.

The methodology includes research and creation. The research is often accomplished by gathering photographic images to gain an understanding, first-hand, of being in the space; this helps achieve more accurate paintings of the locations. The creation is solely done in the studio setting, working from the photographs and sketches to create the final product, bringing to light features and nuances that make an urban system truly unique.

The paintings depict surrounding architecture and steer the public towards the importance of public spaces and how we interact with our urban environment. The work is meant to open a dialogue around how we navigate through the landscapes for transportation.

The areas deemed worthy to paint come from years of careful observation and editing in to create confident and narrative pieces that resonate with a broader audience. Aspiring to make relatable work, and to continue to interconnect art, architecture and urban advancement through the lens of painting.

Eryn O’Neill- Artists Bio

Born in Ottawa, Eryn O’Neill holds a BFA from NSCAD University, and an MFA from the University of Waterloo. She competed her MA at Carleton University in Art and Architectural History and Curatorial Studies.

Currently she is pursuing a Masters of Architecture at the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism at Carleton University (2022-2025).

Eryn attended the Vermont Studio Centre in 2016 and the Golden Foundation Artist in Residence in March 2019.

A multiple Ontario Arts Council Grant recipient, and a two-time recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Award. In 2021 her work was acquired by Global Affairs Canada and the City of Ottawa’s Art Collection.

She is represented at Wallspace Gallery in Ottawa and The Annexe at the Ottawa Art Gallery. O’Neill teaches part-time in the Diploma Program at the Ottawa School of Art.

Eryn lives and works as an artist and academic in Ottawa, with a studio space at The Rectory Art House in the Byward Market.

Déclaration de l’artiste :

Cette série, Étape 2 : La construction du système de train léger d’Ottawa, a commencé par plusieurs visites des stations à divers stades de progression. Les images sont devenues la matière première des peintures. L’objectif du projet était de saisir les éléments de construction de l’intégration d’une ligne ferroviaire dans un centre urbain. La documentation continue exposerait les éléments oubliés associés à une entreprise majeure, créant des peintures où les composants chaotiques et fonctionnels associés à la construction seraient omniprésents. À travers des peintures figuratives, l’exposition immortalise cette période de transition, visant à documenter la temporalité de la construction ; une cible constamment en mouvement.

La première version de l’exposition a été présentée à la Wall Space Gallery en juin 2020. Ces images représentaient les stations achevées desservant la Ligne de la Confédération, des stations Tunney’s Pasture à Blair.

La méthodologie inclut la recherche et la création. La recherche est souvent effectuée en rassemblant des images photographiques pour acquérir une compréhension, de première main, de la mise en espace ; cela permet d’obtenir des peintures plus précises des emplacements. La création se fait uniquement en studio, à partir des photographies et des croquis pour créer le produit final, mettant en lumière les caractéristiques et les nuances qui rendent un système urbain réellement unique.

Les peintures dépeignent l’architecture environnante et incitent le public à prendre conscience de l’importance des espaces publics et de la façon dont nous interagissons avec notre environnement urbain. Le travail vise à ouvrir un dialogue sur la façon dont nous naviguons à travers les paysages pour notre transport.

Le choix des zones valant la peine d’être peintes est soutenu par de nombreuses années d’observation et d’édition minutieuses, et ce pour créer des œuvres puissantes et narratives rejoignant un plus vaste public. Il y a un réel désir de produire un travail auquel on s’associe et à continuer à interconnecter l’art, l’architecture et l’avancement urbain à travers le prisme de la peinture.

Eryn O’Neill – Artistes Bio

Née à Ottawa, Eryn O’Neill est titulaire d’un baccalauréat en beaux-arts (BFA) de la NSCAD University ainsi que d’une maîtrise en beaux-arts (MFA) de la University of Waterloo. Elle a complété sa maîtrise ès arts (MA) à la Carleton University en histoire de l’art et architecture et études en conservation (Art and Architectural History and Curatorial Studies).

Elle poursuit présentement des études dans le programme de maîtrise en architecture à la Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism à la Carleton University (2022-2025).

Eryn a fréquenté le Vermont Studio Centre en 2016 et le programme d’artiste en résidence de la Golden Foundation en mars 2019.

Elle est récipiendaire de plusieurs bourses du Conseil des arts de l’Ontario et deux fois récipiendaire du prix Elizabeth Greenshields. En 2021, son travail a été acquis par Affaires mondiales Canada et par la Ville d’Ottawa pour sa collection d’art.

Elle est représentée par la Wall Space Gallery à Ottawa et par la Galerie Annexe de la Galerie d’art d’Ottawa. O’Neill enseigne à temps partiel dans le programme du diplôme de l’École d’art d’Ottawa.

Eryn vit et travaille en tant qu’artiste et universitaire à Ottawa. Elle possède un espace de studio à The Rectory Art House dans le marché By.
