David Yu | A certain amount of hand holding

The Ottawa School of Art – Orleans Campus Gallery is pleased to bring back a Living Gallery. Living Gallery is an in-gallery residency, treating it like a studio for an artist to create within the gallery space. The gallery will be open for the duration of the residency for the public to see, experience and share something of the artistic process, opening a dialogue between artist and audience whilst letting people have a glimpse into the art making process. The residency will be followed by an exhibition of the work. 

The Ottawa School of Art – Orleans Campus is proud to present Toronto-based installation artist David Yu. David Yu will be working in the gallery from June 15 to 26, 2018. He will also be working and available to the public during our Meet the Artist event on Sunday June 17 from 1pm to 3pm.

David Yu’s residency will culminate with his exhibition A Certain Amount of Hand Holding. The exhibition will be on display from June 26 to August 4, 2018 with a reception on Tuesday evening June 26, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, at which time we are pleased to have David Yu give an in the gallery artist talk at the beginning of the reception. The Ottawa School of Art’s Orleans Gallery is located on the main floor of the Shenkman Arts Centre. All welcome!

For this residency project, David Yu will be building on his ongoing fascination with the interaction between the art and the viewer.  To this end, he will be working on and presenting a collection of installation pieces. As audiences discover and engage with the pieces – consciously or unconsciously – the work will evolve and change over time. Thus, the exhibit will be different from one day to the next, as will the viewer’s experience.

David Yu is a Canadian multimedia, installation, and performance artist. He holds an MFA from the University College London, Slade School of Fine Arts (UK), and a BFA from the Ontario College of Art and Design. He exhibits his work throughout Canada and abroad. He recently completed a solo exhibition at YYZ Artist Outlet (2018), a residency and solo exhibition at MART Gallery Dublin Ireland, funded by the Ontario Arts Council (2015), and participated in Flux Night, Atlanta, Georgia, USA (2012).

A Certain Amount of Hand Holding installation de David Yu

La galerie de l’École d’art d’Ottawa – campus d’Orléans est heureuse de faire appel, une fois de plus, au concept de la galerie vivante. La galerie vivante est une résidence en galerie où l’artiste utilise l’espace comme lieu de création. La galerie sera ouverte pendant la durée de la résidence et permettra au public de voir, expérimenter et contribuer au processus artistique. L’objectif est d’instaurer un dialogue entre l’artiste et le public tout en permettant aux visiteurs d’avoir un aperçu du processus de création. La résidence sera suivie d’une exposition.

L’École d’art d’Ottawa — campus d’Orléans est fière de présenter l’artiste en installation artistique David Yu, établi à Toronto. David Yu travaillera dans la galerie du 15 au 26 juin 2018. Il sera également à l’œuvre et préparé à rencontrer le public lors de notre événement Rencontrez les artistes le dimanche 17 juin de 13 h à 15 h.

La résidence de David Yu culminera avec son exposition A Certain Amount of Hand Holding (Une certaine présence de soutien). L’exposition sera présentée du 26 juin au 4 août 2018 et une réception aura lieu le mardi 26 juin, de 17 h 30 à 19 h 30. Une présentation par l’artiste sera effectuée en début de réception, dans la galerie. La galerie du campus d’Orléans de l’École d’art d’Ottawa est située à l’étage principal du Centre des arts Shenkman. Bienvenue à tous!

Pour ce projet de résidence, David Yu puisera à même sa fascination liée à l’interaction entre l’art et le spectateur. À cette fin, il travaillera sur une série d’installations artistiques. Au fur et à mesure que le public découvrira et interagira avec les œuvres — consciemment ou inconsciemment — le travail évoluera et se modifiera avec le temps. Ainsi, l’exposition sera différente d’un jour à l’autre, tout comme le sera l’expérience du visiteur.

David Yu est un artiste canadien multimédia, d’installation et de performance. Il est titulaire d’une maîtrise en beaux-arts de l’University College London, de la Slade School of Fine Arts (Royaume-Uni) et d’un baccalauréat en beaux-arts de l’Ontario College of Art and Design. Il expose son travail partout au Canada et à l’étranger. Il a récemment présenté une exposition solo au YYZ Artist Outlet (2018), effectué une résidence et tenu une exposition solo à la MART Gallery Dublin Ireland, financée par le Conseil des arts de l’Ontario (2015), et a participé à Flux Night, Atlanta, Georgia, É.-U. (2012).
