Agata Derda | Dark Roads

The Ottawa School of Art Byward Market Campus is proud to present Dark Roads, an exhibition by Agata Derda. Dark Roads is on display from Thursday April 4 to Sunday May 12, 2019 at the Ottawa School of Art’s Gallery located on the main floor of the Downtown Campus in the Byward Market. All are welcome!

Agata Derda was born in Poland in the 80s as a second of four siblings in a working class family. She started her art education as a child in a local youth centre and continued until she was 19 years old at the High School of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, Poland. A Few years after finishing the high school, Derda immigrated to Ireland where she undertook a BFA in Printmaking in the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology. Then Derda moved to Edmonton, Canada in 2011 to start an MFA at the University of Alberta. She has shown her work at several solo shows in Canada and national and international group shows (China, the United States and Europe). Currently, she lives and works exclusively on her art practice in Toronto.

“My works represent post-apocalyptic versions of a human world in which I see remains of a modern civilization whose ‘glory’ days are over. Every structure present in my work appears as human-made or carries signs of a human intervention (cuts, rope ties etc.) to signify a human presence in the work, even though they are unseen.”

The opening night vernissage & reception will take place at the OSA Main Gallery in the ByWard Market on
Thursday April 4, 2019 from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Admission is free.

This free exhibition runs from April 4 to May 13, 2019.

Agata Derde • Dark Roads (« Chemins obscurs »)

L’École d’art d’Ottawa – campus du marché By est fière de présenter Dark Roads (« Chemins Obscurs ») une exposition de l’artiste Agata Derde présentée du jeudi 4 avril au dimanche 13 mai 2019 à la galerie de l’École d’art d’Ottawa – campus du marché By située à l’étage principal du campus du centre-ville. Bienvenue à tous!

Agata Derda est née en Pologne dans les années 1980, la deuxième des quatre enfants d’une famille ouvrière. Son éducation artistique a débuté dans un centre jeunesse local alors qu’Agata était encore enfant, se poursuivant à l’école secondaire des beaux-arts de Wroclaw jusqu’à ce qu’elle atteigne l’âge de 19 ans. Quelques années après avoir terminé ses études secondaires, Mme Derda a émigré vers l’Irlande, où elle a obtenu un baccalauréat en beaux-arts en gravure à l’institut de technologie de Galway-Mayo. Elle a ensuite déménagé à Edmonton en 2011 pour commencer une maîtrise en beaux-arts à l’Université de l’Alberta. Elle a participé à plusieurs expositions en solo au Canada et à des expositions collectives autant au pays qu’à l’étranger (Chine, États-Unis et Europe). Elle habite actuellement à Toronto, où elle se consacre exclusivement à son art.

« Mon travail reflète une version post-apocalyptique d’un monde humain dans lequel je vois les restes d’une civilisation moderne dont les jours de « gloire » sont révolus. Toutes les structures présentes dans mes œuvres semblent d’origine humaine ou portent les signes d’une intervention humaine (coupures, cordages, etc.) pour suggérer la présence d’êtres humains, même si ceux-ci ne sont pas visibles. »

Le vernissage et la réception de la soirée d’ouverture auront lieu à la galerie principale de l’ÉAO au marché By le jeudi 4 avril 2019 de 17 h à 20 h. L’entrée est gratuite.

Cette exposition gratuite se déroulera du 4 avril au 13 mai 2019.
