Painting Illumination: The Persistence of Yellow , start date: 12/04/2021
Each year, I celebrate a particular colour in a course. This year it is yellow, a  colour that can be powerfully expressive in very different ways. Looking at artists' work through history, how Van Gogh painted the yellow sunflowers, how cadmium made that possible, different yellow pigments, and the emotional and symbolic power of yellow, let's take on a predominantly Yellow painting, maybe that yellow sun circle of hope and optimism, stars with yellow centres,  bananas, lemons or yellow cows (Franz Marc)! A Super Yellow Paint day to learn to create effects of illumination (glow, opalescence, translucence as per Faber Birren's applied colour theory, and the importance of Grey with Yellow, simultaneous contrast of colour.

ONLINE - Intro to Linotcut (Printing), Intro-inter: Thurs, 1:30 - 4 pm, start date: 01/20/2022
Register This print class introduces students to relief (linocut) printing techniques, enabling them to explore their own imagery through the versatility of print. Because linocut printing does not require toxic chemicals to create the plate, or a printing press to print, it is an ideal technique to develop at home. Working in black and white, students will explore expressive mark and pattern, the essence of linocut. Colour printing using chine colle will also be explored.

Materials:
linoleum (several pieces, 4”x6” or larger) Note: linoleum comes in battleship (the hardest, has a burlap backing. This is the best, unless you have strength issues in your hands. Mounted or unmounted) It is also available as Speedy carve, or soft cut,(super soft, cuts like butter, but you can’t get as fine a detail, and you will not be able to print in on a printing press at a later date) It also comes in a harder rubber, easy carve (Not at DeSerres or Wallacks in Ottawa)
Paper for printing: medium or heavy weight sketchbook, or oriental paper. Paper must be 2 or 3” larger than your lino block) Pads of Relief/linoleum printing paper O.K.
Printing ink: speedball water-based, or Cranfield’s Caligo safe wash (black is best) 75ml. If you buy more than one colour, you should buy another roller too
inking plate: Plexi or glass etc (8” x 10” min) clean Styrofoam plate, rubber or pyrex baking pan…
Brayer: Speedball soft rubber 4” best, 2”, 6” O.K..
Lino cutting chisels: speedball handle and 6 blades, or set of small chisels (Lee Valley etc)
Pencil, permanent marker: Sharpie fine point,
Optional: (tracing paper, transfer paper)
(Optional for later in the course Scrap coloured paper, light weight fabric etc (for chine colle)
Glue
other ink colours, additional brayers, wider variety of paper)

If you find a beginning linocutting kit: ink, soft roller, linoleum, chisels, that may be a cheaper and easier way to gather many of the materials.
