The Space Between Us: Art as a Connector, Intro, Mon, 9 - 12, start date: 01/30/2023
Register The purpose of this course is to connect people to each other, their fellow students and to themselves. Each week students will be given prompts and guidance to create artwork stemming from their own lives. The student can expect the widening of their source of inspiration, thought process, and outlook toward art and life. Artists should expect to think in depth and reflect on each class, to awaken or recognize a part of their life that might not have been fully acknowledged before. This course will allow students to express their thoughts and life in a new way. No artistic experience is required. Students will work in any medium they feel inspired to use (e.g., Drawing, painting, photography, etc.) The course is designed to free the student/artist, using the prompts and guidance in the class, to reconnect with who they are and how they fit in this world and with other human beings.

Breaking Boundaries - Canadian Women Artists 1880 - 1930, Intro, Mon, 6 - 9 pm, start date: 02/13/2023
Register In the last decade of the nineteenth century, Canada witnessed a new wave of artists going abroad,
amongst those - the first Canadian Women Impressionists. This 4-weeks course will follow in the
footsteps of some incredible women, who, settling in the French capital and absorbing the air of the
juste milieu, trained, and matured as leading Impressionist painters upon their return home.
Amongst the first to study abroad and learn how to capture the transient qualities of light, were
Frances Jones, Sophie Pemberton, Laura Muntz, Mary A. Bell and Margaret Macpherson, who
garnered special attention for their allegiance to Impressionism. Their choices of subject matter
were emblematic of their personal touch, revealing a streak of spontaneity, that moved their art
away from former structural underpinnings and demonstrated their zest for capturing the everyday
experiences. As we examine their figure’s studies, or their views in the countryside or in the city, we
will discuss their modernist approach, animated through their immediate engagement with their
environments.
Further, we will discuss how in response to the segregated spheres of men’s (public) and women’s
(private) lives in Victorian society, domestic scenes were considered especially suitable for women
artists in the late 19 th century. However, as debates emerged about industrial progress, equal rights
and women’s suffrage, Canadian artists began to reconsider the role and representation of the
modern woman. This “new woman” posed a threat to a social order dependent on traditional,
binary gender roles.
We will discover that for some Canadian women artists, companionship with other women was a
constant in both their professional and personal lives. Generally, historical sources do not refer
explicitly to these women’s sexuality. Instead, same-sex relationships between women were often
presented publicly as “romantic friendships” as a way of concealing and protecting the relationship.
Helen McNicoll shared her life with British artist Dorothea Sharp, and Florence Carlyle lived with her
model Judith Hastings.
