Facing New Media: Three Approaches to the Portrait, Intro: Thurs, 6:30 - 9:30 pm
This course takes place at the Beaverbrook Community Centre: 4 Beaverbrook Rd, Kanata, ON K2K 1L1
Main room, first floor

For students who have some experience drawing the portrait in graphite or charcoal, this course is an opportunity to learn to work in different media. In this course, we’ll learn about three of the traditional techniques for rendering a portrait. We’ll start with the “trois crayons” technique, first used in the Renaissance and popular in the 18th century. Next, we will turn our attention to pen and ink, and look to the artists of the 19th century for inspiration. Finally, we’ll have an introduction to working in oils using a limited palette, with Zorn as our inspiration. We’ll learn about each of the techniques and try some practice exercises, and then we’ll have the opportunity to work from a live model and create a portrait using each technique. Please note that we’ll be using water-miscible oils for this course; recommended brands and colours will be included on the supply list.

Figure Drawing and the Timeless Anatomical Principles from the Great Masters, Intro-adv, Mon & Wed, 6:30 - 9:30 pm
During this course, adjusted to the upcoming spring season, students are invited to explore practical and emotional benefits of depicting inanimate natural objects – such as plants, fruits (either local and totally exotic ones), leaves, acorns, conkers, and trees around Ottawa. Structures, forms, wondrous beauty of common pavement milk thistle, tufts of city moss, or some species of algae, alongside with orchard crab apples may be transformed into perfect sketches, or carefully rendered botanical illustrations. Every student will be able to build their own portfolio of hand-painted images, enhance their inner confidence and use these practical skills in painting and drawing for the further professional development.

Figure Drawing and the Timeless Anatomical Principles from the Great Masters, Intro-adv, Tues & Thurs, 6:30 - 9:30 pm
Suitable for all levels of artistic skills, this course analyzes the human form by drawing from medieval techniques of crosshatching found in works of such masters as Da Vinci, Durer, Holbein, Raphael, and Rembrandt. Embracing the challenge of working from the live nude model via a series of exercises and demonstrations, the course focuses on the rib cage, pelvis and thigh, knee and lower leg, foot, shoulder girdle, arm, hand, neck and head. Using the traditional tools of charcoal, nib and ink, students will acquire the practical knowledge of the old masters in seeing light and form to shape and inform a personal, artistic approach to the human body.
