Facing New Media: Three Approaches to the Portrait, Intro: Thurs, 6:30 - 9:30 pm
This course takes place at the Beaverbrook Community Centre: 4 Beaverbrook Rd, Kanata, ON K2K 1L1
Main room, first floor

For students who have some experience drawing the portrait in graphite or charcoal, this course is an opportunity to learn to work in different media. In this course, we’ll learn about three of the traditional techniques for rendering a portrait. We’ll start with the “trois crayons” technique, first used in the Renaissance and popular in the 18th century. Next, we will turn our attention to pen and ink, and look to the artists of the 19th century for inspiration. Finally, we’ll have an introduction to working in oils using a limited palette, with Zorn as our inspiration. We’ll learn about each of the techniques and try some practice exercises, and then we’ll have the opportunity to work from a live model and create a portrait using each technique. Please note that we’ll be using water-miscible oils for this course; recommended brands and colours will be included on the supply list.

The Ancient Technique of Icon Painting, Intro-adv: Tues & Thurs, 6:30 - 9:30 pm
In this course, students of all levels of artistic skills will create egg-tempera paintings by exploring forgotten medieval techniques of making Byzantine icons. We will learn how to apply gold leaf on handcrafted wood-panels and mix pigments with home-made emulsion and gesso. We will also learn how and why these ancient artistic methods influenced contemporary art and visual culture. For this reason, Byzantine art theory of color, drawing, and composition will be used to discover a new artistic medium and mode seeing images for creative self-expression. This will be done first via a series of exercises to understand the steps of painting exemplary Byzantine icons. In following this historical art form, students will next paint a “personal icon” on a wood-panel based on images and visual composition of their choice.

Claude Monet and the Colour of Summer | All Levels (Sat|Sun July 18|19 - 9:30am-4:30pm)
Monet was the quintessential impressionist. His 1884 painting "Impression, Sunrise" gave title to the movement and the impact of his radical departure in use of colour, types of subject and method of painting, often "en plein air" are all with us today. Monet rejected the traditional approach to landscape painting and looked at the effects of light on nature itself. In his later years his massive Waterlilies paintings presage abstract expressionism. This workshop will appeal to painters of all levels, exploring the romance of outdoor motifs with Claude Monet as inspiration.
