This class is great for beginners in printmaking, as well as experienced printmaking artists with non-typical ideas or people interested in pop art.
The idea of the class is to integrate printmaking techniques and qualities in your personal work. Unlike other print classes, this course is more focused on the aesthetic and visual possibilities of printmaking, and not the “hard rules”. The Ancient technique of Icon painting, Intro- Adv, Tues, 6 - 9 pm, start date: 01/17/2023
Register In this course, students of all levels of artistic skills will create egg-tempera paintings by exploring forgotten medieval techniques of making Byzantine icons. We will learn how to apply gold leaf on handcrafted wood-panels and mix pigments with home-made emulsion and gesso. We will also learn how and why these ancient artistic methods influenced contemporary art and visual culture. For this reason, Byzantine art theory of color, drawing, and composition will be used to discover a new artistic medium and mode seeing images for creative self-expression. This will be done first via a series of exercises to understand the steps of painting exemplary Byzantine icons. In following this historical art form, students will paint next a “personal icon” on a wood-panel based on images and visual composition of their chose.

With some computer savvy, artists can use their photographs to create and print images with polyester plates.

Emily Carr and Georgia O'Keeffe (B) | All Levels | Sat + Sun | Feb 11 + 12 | 9:30am-4:30pm, start date: 02/11/2023
Register Emily Carr and Georgia O'Keeffe may have met, but the record is unclear: these two masters from the first part of the 20th century followed very different paths. Working in quite distinct physical and cultural environments, both artists explored different styles and motifs throughout their careers. Some of Georgia O'Keefe's work was controversial in her time, whilst Emily Carr found little support for her style of modernism until later in life. Whether inspired by powerful floral and surreal southwestern motifs, or the mysteries of Pacific peoples and the Canadian wilderness, let’s explore the contribution of these two giants of 20th century North American art. In each session, David will be demonstrating key aspects throughout and participants will be able to create a painting from scratch or equally, bring along a work-in-progress. Individual coaching will be provided and participants are welcome to use the medium of their choice. Appeals to realist, impressionist and modernist painters alike.
Oil, acrylic, watercolour, and pastel artists are all welcome!
Materials not included.

Bien que l’atelier se déroule en anglais, un suivi individuel en français est possible.

Two of Seven: Lawren Harris and MacDonaldMacD. MacDonald (B) | All Levels | Sat + Sun | March 11 + 12 | 9:30am-4:30pm, start date: 03/18/2023
Register Lawren Harris provided much of the vision, energy and resources behind the Group of Seven. J.E.H. MacDonald, the elder statesman of the group, was perhaps the artistic rock. On annual trips to the North Shore of Lake Superior, they evolved the style the Group of Seven is best known for: rich, decorative colours melding with deeply-felt perceptions of nature. Whether inspired by Harris's stark landscapes of the Canadian North or the more lyrical style of MacDonald, join us for a weekend in the company of the Group of Seven.
