Teen Portfolio Development: Drawing and Painting Emphasis | Ages 12-15 | Sat 1:30pm-4:30pm, start date: 04/15/2023
This course will focus on developing students’ observational skills while focusing on tone, form, proportion, likeness, depth, composition, and texture. Special attention will be given to portraiture, life drawing, and still life. Students will work from a model in preparation for the Canterbury visual arts interview. Through a variety of painting, drawing, mixed media, and sculpture projects, students will refine their skills and develop a substantial body of work. This course will cover all of the requirements for the Canterbury visual arts portfolio. Also available to teens wishing to attend De la Salle, or pursuing their own interest in art. Students are asked to bring their personal sketchbooks each class.

Develop your landscape drawing and painting confidence! We will cover sound practices as they apply to both plein-air and studio endeavours. What to paint on location: should I sketch or use water media? How might I best use reference photos? Who hasn't returned to the studio from a sketching expedition and thought, “what now?” Weather permitting, these workshops will include optional “plein-air” sketching and painting expeditions at nearby scenic locations, with a return to the studio to create spectacular finished works.

Spring is the time to be outdoors and creating art from observation! This course focuses on developing drawing skills from observation and then working in the studio on paintings and illustrations using watercolour media: paint, watercolour crayons, and watercolour pencil crayons. Students will also work from photographs of lands they have lived on and visited, as well as from imagination of their connection to the land. This course focuses on both technique development composition while exploring the theme of our connection to the land, the sky, waterways, and the species we share this planet with.

The Medieval Egg Tempera Techniques of Icon Painting, Intro-inter; Tues, 6 - 9 pm, start date: 04/25/2023

In this course, students of all levels of artistic skills will create egg-tempera paintings by exploring forgotten medieval techniques of making Byzantine icons. We will learn how to apply gold leaf on handcrafted wood-panels and mix pigments with home-made emulsion and gesso. We will also learn how and why these ancient artistic methods influenced contemporary art and visual culture. For this reason, Byzantine art theory of color, drawing, and composition will be used to discover a new artistic medium and mode seeing images for creative self-expression. This will be done first via a series of exercises to understand the steps of painting exemplary Byzantine icons. Linoleum is an excellent material to use to get a feel for the printmaking process and its results. Lino is easy to cut, relatively inexpensive and it prints well so you will start at the beginning, learning to use the tools from start to finish to produce monochrome prints. You will then adventure into colour and discover the multitude of possibilities that printmaking has to offer!

This studio is intended for students who have some experience in wood carving/sculpture. Lots of one-on-one guidance will be given on improving carving technique, exploring different types of carving such as high and low relief, and 3-dimensional carving of both realistic and abstract subject matter. Throughout the course demonstrations and presentations will be given on various carving techniques, the use of power tools, carving and sharpening of hand tools, and the characteristics of different kinds of wood.
Students are encouraged to bring in any personal wood carving tools they have.
Basswood, and basic chisels and gouges will be provided.

Learn the fantastic technique of enameling through this intensive and fun weekend.
Enameling allows you to add colour and style to your jewellery through the medium of glass. In this beginner’s level workshop, you will learn about this ancient technique and explore the possibilities of working with enamel on copper. Techniques covered in this class include:
• Shaping (slight doming of work)
• Preparing metal for enameling
• Enameling onto copper blanks
• Sifting techniques
• Painting techniques
• Graphite on enamel (drawing)
• Torch firing
This workshop is focused on using small handheld torches to fire the enamels, no kiln will be used. Throughout the day, you will create several samples and make a pair of earrings and a pendant using the copper blanks.

In this half-day workshop, using a simple 12” x 16" wooden panel and chalk paint, participants will learn step-by-step how to paint a charming peony, or other beloved flower. Students will also learn how to create a rustic vintage-looking finish, using sandpaper, paint, and wax.
