SUMMMER TERM 2011 AT OSA

Diana Thorneycroft & David Ruben

This summer is going to be a busy time at the Ottawa School of Art.  This is the second summer that OSA is offering a full slate of classes at both of our campuses. Students can choose from a wide range of drawing, sculpture, painting, photography, jewelry making and specialized workshops.  Whether you are an avid practicing artist or just looking to try something new – we encourage you to sign up for a workshop of two this summer. It’s a great time of the year to renew your creative energies – either in the bustles of the ByWard market or at the chic and modern Shenkman centre.

There are four levels of instruction to help students select courses relative to their skill and experience including: Fundamental, introductory, intermediate and advanced.

This year we are pleased to announce that Diana Thorneycroft and David Ruben will be teaching 2 of the workshops at the ByWard Market campus. This is an extremely exciting opportunity for students to get first hand instruction by 2 well known and respected Canadian artists.

Diana Thorneycroft is a celebrated Winnipeg artist who has exhibited across Canada and abroad including Moscow, Tokyo and Sydney. She has won numerous awards including an Assistance to Visual Arts Long-term Grant from the Canada Council, several Senior Arts Grants from the Manitoba Arts Council and a Fleck Followship from the Banff Centre for the Arts. Diana’s work has been featured on national radio documentaries and a CBC national documentary for television. Her work has also been included in the 2002 released Phaidon Press publication Blink, which presents the work of 100 rising stars in photography, additionally, Canadian Art Magazine selected Diana’s work “Group of Seven Awkward Moments” as one of the Top 10 Exhibitions of 2008. Diana’s class “Experimental Drawing” is a one-week intensive workshop that will engage students in non-traditional approaches to drawing. The intent is for individuals to broaden their visual vocabularies and discover new ways to approach their own artistic practice.

David’s works are featured in numerous galleries around Canada and abroad. He has had numerous commission works such as the 25 tonne sculpture titled “Inuksuk Gateway 2000” located at 550 Queen’s Quay West in Toronto and “The Lost Child” located at the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton Headquarters in Ottawa. David’s work focuses on exploring his Inuit roots and showcases collected stories from his travels home in Canada’s Western Arctic. His stone carving process teaches many rituals of the Inuit people; hunting practices, healing, animals and so on, but most of all it teaches “the spirit world of the Eskimo People”. David’s class “Romancing the Stone” will introduce both beginner and experienced carvers/sculpting students his process and techniques that he has acquired. David’s techniques are quite simple and straightforward and through this workshop he hopes to be able to inspire his students to become serious artists who will want to continue a life of creative endeavours in stone.

Workshops are first come first serve so please make sure to register soon.

SAISON D’ÉTÉ 2011 À l’ÉAO

Diana Thorneycroft & David Ruben
