Roger Sutcliffe: Inspiration 150 Years On

Artist Statement:

In honour of Canada’s 150th birthday, this series of woodcut prints highlight parts of the City of Ottawa and Gatineau Park that have personal meaning to me, and inspire me to create art works from my experiences and observations made while hiking and cross- country skiing in the region.

Frequently, I use the woodblock relief technique for printmaking, carving either softwood planks, or hardwood plywood. I like the immediacy and physicality of the processes of carving to create the relief surface and printing, and the interaction with the wood surface and its influence on the aesthetics of the final image. Usually, I print the images from the prepared woodblock in black only, celebrating not only the power of black and white but the influences of the German Expressionists, whose printmaking inspire me.

Roger Sutcliffe : 150 ans d’inspiration
