The Ottawa School of Art is pleased to present Compelled, an exhibition of works by Toronto Artist Ed Pien. The exhibition takes place from April 26 to June 1, 2014 at the Ottawa School of Art’s Orleans Campus Gallery on the main floor of the Shenkman Arts Centre, Orleans. Come join us Sunday April 27 for Artist talk and demo from 12 to 1 followed by a reception from 1pm to 3pm in the Gallery.

This extraordinary exhibition Features both Ed Pien’s drawings and paper cuts. Pien large-scale paper cuttings are astounding in their complexity with a juxtaposition of strong images in such a delicate art form. Pien finds inspiration from an exploration of folklore to engravings by Jacques Callot and installations by Nancy Spero to create his work. One is captivated by the tangle of trees and figures. The work celebrates enchantment and imagination while exploring the potentials of paper-cut based art. The gestures in each piece enact ambiguous narratives, inviting viewers to participate in formulating their own interpretations of the inexplicable that touch upon the realm of the uncanny.

Mr. Pien immigrated to Canada from Taiwan at the age of 11. He received his BFA from the University of Western Ontario in 1982 and his MFA from York University in 1984. Pien’s work has been exhibited at the Bienniale of Sydney as well as the Drawing Center in New York and the Goethe Institute in Berlin, as well as at the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Pien has also completed numerous residencies in Canada and abroad, and his work has been collected by the Tapiès Foundation, the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal and Centrum Beeldende Kunst, among other institutions.
