LEVELS OF STUDY

The Ottawa School of Art offers four levels of instruction to help students select courses relative to their skill and experience. Each level includes courses covering a variety of media. A minimum number of registrations are required to avoid cancellation of a course. Please register 5 days before the start date.

FUNDAMENTAL

Most students at this level have a strong interest in art with little practical experience. Fundamental courses help develop fundamental skills and encourage students by giving them a solid start in art.
La plupart des étudiants de ce niveau s’intéressent beaucoup aux arts mais ont peu de connaissances pratiques. Les cours de base aident les étudiants à développer les compétences essentielles et les encouragent en leur enseignant de bonnes techniques artistiques.

INTRODUCTORY

Students who are at the introductory level have some basic techniques in a specific medium and have identified their directional focus. Courses designated as Introductory/Intermediate allow students to move to the slightly more difficult level when they are ready.

INTERMEDIATE

Although not a requirement, many intermediate students have taken several introductory courses. While goals for both levels are similar, intermediate level students have begun to understand and apply themselves to their chosen medium with some skill.

ADVANCED

Advanced students work independently and receive one-to-one instructor support and ongoing critiques of their work. Students concentrate on individual style and content while developing strong directional focus and technical skills.

REGISTRATION POLICY

Payment in full must be made at the time of registration. The Ottawa School of Art accepts cash, cheque, VISA or MasterCard credit cards and INTERAC bank debit cards. Registration may be made in person or by telephone (VISA or MasterCard only).
NOTE: There is a $25 administration charge (+ HST) on all NSF cheques.
We urge you to register early, at least two weeks prior to commencement of the course. Space will not be reserved without full payment. The Ottawa School of Art reserves the right to cancel any class due to insufficient enrollment or other unforeseen circumstances.

Please note that as a not-for-profit organization, the Ottawa School of Art charges an annual family membership fee of $30 (plus tax). The membership entitles you to take classes at the school, take part in members’ exhibitions, sell art work through the school store, rent studio space and facilities.

WITHDRAWAL, REFUND, TRANSFER AND CANCELLATION POLICY

If for any reason, you wish to withdraw from a course for which you have registered, you must file your request in writing to the Registrar with a copy of your receipt, with the following in mind:

  • Prior to the start of classes (up to the starting date of the class) the student receives a refund of the course fees, less a $25 (+ HST) administrative charge.
  • Prior to the start of the second class, the student receives a refund of one half of the course fee, less a $25 (+ HST) administrative charge.
  • No refunds or credits will be provided once the second class has been delivered, whether attended or not; if a student has suffered an illness a credit toward future courses may, however, be negotiated at the discretion of the school when provided with a doctor’s note, less a $25 (+ HST) administrative charge, as well as a charge for each session from the starting date of the class to the student’s withdrawal date.

If for any reason you wish to transfer from a course for which you have registered to another course, and your request can be accommodated; a $25 (+ HST) fee will be charged for transfers made prior to the start of the classes; and a $25 (+ HST) fee will be charged for transfers made once the first class has taken place.

If for any reason the Ottawa School of Art cancels a course, every attempt will be made to identify an alternative course that will be suitable to the student. If this is not possible, the course fee will be fully refunded, with no administrative charges applied. If, over the duration of a course, a class is cancelled, every attempt will be made to arrange a ‘make up’ class. If this is not possible, the class portion of the course fee will be fully refunded, with no administration fee applied.

NOTE: Student withdrawal, refund, or transfer requests will not be processed by telephone. In many cases, they are handled by fax, using a special form. Refunds will be issued by cheque only; please allow 7 – 14 days for processing.
