Toronto based artist Amanda McCavour breaks from traditional textile arts by using a sewing machine to create thread drawings and installations. Through an exploration of line and its 2d and 3d implications, stitches are used in her artwork to explore thread’s subtle quality versus its accumulative presence and its structural possibilities versus its fragility.

Neon Clouds is a site specific piece of low hanging “clouds” consisting of hundreds of sewn elements, hung from the gallery ceiling. This dense collection of sewn lines suspended in the air acts as a kind of fog or smog in the gallery, referencing pollutants and obscuring visibility. The bright pink, orange, yellow, green and blue threads used to create this installation are barely visible when viewing just one thread, but through the build-up of line, they create a neon atmosphere that moves slightly with the air currents in the room.

In addition, Neon Bloom, is based on an imagined and abstracted field of flowers adds a dimension, using the ideas around the space and garden. This large installation comprised of thousands of pieces installed on the floor, visitors are able to walk through and experience this colorful field.

In different ways, both of these large pieces transform the OSA’s Shenkman gallery into a faux outdoor landscape that the viewer can become immersed in. These embroidered neon environments unnatural and glowing, coloring the entire space with their hue.

Along with these large installations, smaller pieces are installed which create tension and interest in the contrasting scale and form.

Amanda McCavour completed her BFA at York University and her MFA at the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Philadelphia USA. McCavour has shown extensively both nationally and internationally and continues to push the bounds of fiber arts.
