Reception: meet the artist takes place on Sunday, March 24, 2013.

Chiko Chazunguza’s  work is infused with the experiences of his homeland. His most recent collection, 3 Timensional, is inspired by the struggles faced not only by people in his native Zimbabwe, but by people the world over. It juxtaposes the absence of basic commodities and systematized consumerism and how that shapes our social interactions.

Chikonzero (Chiko) Chazunguza is a Zimbabwean visual artist, whose multimedia artworks raise searching questions about the postcolonial condition and about the unstable role and nature of art in its context. Amongst his most compelling works are those that reinstate for the viewer a sense of ritual order and of life’s deeper mysteries, alongside proffering incisive, yet subtle social analysis.

Born and raised in the high-density suburb of Highfields, in Harare, Zimbabwe, Chiko deliberately set out to re-connect with local modes of fabrication and visuality, exploring their areas of aesthetic overlap with Western traditions to produce new visual forms and new kinds of visual knowledge.

In his paintings, printmaking as well as in his installations Chiko has been known for his bold and captivating colours and forms as well as intergrading a variety of materials, including objects of everyday African life, challenging issues of post colonial conditions in Zimbabwe including land distribution, food insecurity, degrading environment, and traditional rituals.
